The highway through Guanacaste is flat and well-maintained for the majority of the route. Vehicles include A/C, WiFi, snacks, and charging ports.
For this long route, Discovery upgrade is worth it ($80 extra) — break up the drive with a stop at Río Tárcoles crocodile bridge or lunch in Puntarenas.
Realistic 4.5 to 5 hours. Most travelers heading to Tamarindo fly into LIR (Liberia) which is only 1 hour away — but if you're routing through SJO, this is the standard option.
