The coastal route takes you south along the Costanera Sur highway, descending from the Central Valley through Atenas to the Pacific coast. After passing Jaco and Quepos, the road reaches Dominical β a small surf town on the South Pacific. Approximately 3.5 hours of driving through mountain and coastal terrain.
Paved highway with mountain sections. The Costanera Sur coastal road is excellent.
Dominical is known for powerful waves - perfect for experienced surfers. Beginners should try nearby Dominicalito beach.
Approximately 3.5 to 4 hours. The road is well-paved for the majority of the route, with some curves near the coast. Child seats included at no additional cost β specify the type when booking.
Dominical works well in the Pacific Loop: SJO β Dominical β Manuel Antonio β SJO is around $500-$700 for up to 6 passengers. Or combine with Uvita: SJO β Dominical β Uvita β SJO, since they're only 20 minutes apart. Want to extend the drive into a memorable day? Google shows about 3-3.5 hours but plan for 4. The coastal route via Jaco and Quepos is scenic but has sections under construction. The mountain route over Cerro de la Muerte is faster on paper but challenging with curves and fog. We usually take the coastal route β it's the smarter choice.
Dominical is approximately 3.5 hours from SJO via the coastal route. The highway is smooth and traffic-free at night. No surcharges for late departures.
Dominical is our favorite surfer town. Leave early from SJO and you'll catch the afternoon swell. The drive down the coast past Jaco is beautiful. Ask your driver to stop at the Whale's Tail viewpoint in Uvita if you have 10 minutes β worth it. And try the fish tacos at the main beach, locals go there.
