Most articles you'll find online about Costa Rica shuttle prices are years out of date. Prices went up in 2024 and again in early 2026, and the published rates from competitors don't always match what they actually charge once you book.
This guide is current as of 2026 — these are the prices we charge, and a reasonable benchmark for the market.
How private shuttle pricing works
Private shuttles are sold per vehicle, not per person. So a $220 USD shuttle from SJO to La Fortuna costs the same whether you're 1 person or 6 people in the vehicle. Pricing tiers usually break at:
- 1–6 passengers: Standard van (Hyundai Staria, Toyota Hiace, etc.)
- 7–9 passengers: Larger van
- 10–12 passengers: Extended van or sprinter
Once you go over 12, you typically need two vehicles.
What's included (with a reputable operator)
- Door-to-door pickup and drop-off
- Professional bilingual driver
- Flight tracking for airport pickups
- Free child seats (infant, convertible, booster) on request
- Bottled water
- Onboard WiFi
- Full insurance
- All taxes
What's NOT usually included: tips ($10–20 per family is customary for longer trips), tolls (they're cheap, but technically separate), extra stops beyond 30 minutes (some companies charge $35/hr).

Standard vs VIP service
Most operators (us included) offer two service tiers:
Standard: Direct route, professional driver, all the included items above. Best for airport transfers and travelers who just want to get from A to B.
VIP (+$45 USD): Same vehicle, but the driver can stop at one or two tourist spots along the way (1–2 hours flexible), brings a welcome kit (local beers, sodas, snacks, fruit), and acts more like a tour guide than a transport driver. Best for honeymooners and travelers on a longer transfer (SJO to La Fortuna, La Fortuna to Manuel Antonio).
When a private shuttle beats the alternatives
Private shuttle vs shared shuttle: A shared shuttle for SJO to La Fortuna costs ~$55 per person. For a family of 4, that's $220 — essentially the same as a private shuttle ($220 total for 1–6 pax) but you sit in a 12-passenger van for 4–5 hours instead of 3. The private shuttle wins for any group of 3+.
Private shuttle vs rental car: A rental car for a week in Costa Rica is $450–700 all-in (base rate + mandatory insurance + gas + airport return fee). If your itinerary involves 3 destination shuttles, the shuttles cost roughly the same — and you skip the parking, navigation, and stress.
Private shuttle vs taxi: Taxis from SJO to La Fortuna run $250–300 USD, more than private shuttles. They're a last resort, not a savings option.
When you should NOT book private:
- You're 1 person on a budget — use shared shuttles, saves you $150+ over the trip.
- You're staying in one city and not moving around much — Ubers and taxis for short rides.
- You plan to drive yourself across 5+ destinations — rental car becomes economical at that point.
Why prices vary between operators
You'll see prices for the same SJO–La Fortuna route ranging from $180 to $400 between different companies. The cheap ones usually:
- Use older vans without good insurance
- Don't include child seats (charge $15 extra each)
- Don't track flights (you wait if you're delayed)
- Drivers don't speak English
- Cancel last-minute when they overbook
The expensive ones usually offer the same thing as mid-priced operators but with more aggressive marketing. The sweet spot is the established mid-priced operators ($200–250 for SJO to La Fortuna, similar markup for other routes).
Tipping a private shuttle driver
Tipping isn't required but is appreciated. Customary in Costa Rica:
- Short airport transfer (under 1 hour): $5–10 USD.
- Medium transfer (1–3 hours): $10–20 USD.
- Long transfer with stops (4+ hours): $20–40 USD or 10% of the fare.
Tip in cash (USD or colones), directly to the driver, at the end of the trip.
How to book
Book at least 1 week in advance for high season (December–April), 2–3 days minimum any other time. Most operators (us included) confirm by email within a few hours of booking with the driver's contact info and a tracking link for the day of.
