How Much Does Private Transportation Cost in Costa Rica? (2026 Prices)

The honest answer: a private shuttle in Costa Rica costs between $90 and $450 USD per trip in 2026, depending on the route, vehicle size, and operator. That's a wide range, so let's get specific.

This guide gives you the actual 2026 prices for every popular route, what's normally included, what you should never pay extra for, and how to spot a scam quote.

Quick answer: 2026 prices for the most popular routes

All prices are per vehicle (not per person), include taxes, and assume a standard van (Hyundai Staria, 1–5 passengers). Bigger vans for groups of 6+ add about $40–80 to the trip.

What's included in the price

When you book with a legitimate operator, you should get all of these without paying extra:

  • Door-to-door pickup and drop-off — hotel, Airbnb, or exact address.
  • Professional bilingual driver (English / Spanish).
  • Modern vehicle, fully insured (look for vehicles 2023 or newer).
  • Flight tracking on airport pickups — the driver waits if your flight is delayed.
  • Free child seats (infant, convertible, booster) on request. Costa Rica law requires them for kids under 12.
  • All tolls and taxes.
  • Bottled water on board.
  • WiFi on board (varies by operator).
  • Short stops (restroom, photos, snack) at no extra cost.

What's NOT usually included

  • Driver tips. Customary $10–20 USD for a 3-hour transfer, $20–40 for a 5-hour transfer with stops. Not required but appreciated.
  • Meals. For long transfers, you pay for your own lunch if you stop at a restaurant.
  • Extra long stops (over 30 minutes). Some operators charge $30–50/hour for waiting time beyond that.
  • Extra destinations beyond the booked route.

How much does it cost per person?

This is where private shuttles shine vs shared shuttles. Because the price is per vehicle, the per-person cost drops dramatically as your group grows:

| Group size | SJO → La Fortuna private | Per person | |---|---|---| | 1 person | $220 | $220 | | 2 people | $220 | $110 | | 3 people | $220 | $73 | | 4 people | $220 | $55 | | 5 people | $220 | $44 |

For comparison, a shared shuttle on the same route is ~$55 per person, no matter the group size. So:

  • Group of 1–2: shared shuttle is cheaper.
  • Group of 3: private and shared are similar; private wins on time/comfort.
  • Group of 4+: private is the same total cost AND faster (no other pickups).

Why prices vary so much between operators

You'll see SJO → La Fortuna quoted anywhere from $150 to $450. Here's what's actually behind the spread:

The cheap end ($150–180)

Almost always one of these red flags:

  • Older vehicles without good insurance — a fender bender becomes your problem.
  • Charging $15 extra per child seat (which should be free).
  • No flight tracking — if your flight is late, you wait or pay extra.
  • Drivers don't speak English — challenging if you have questions or instructions.
  • Last-minute cancellations because they overbooked.

The mid-range ($200–280)

Established operators with:

  • 2023+ vehicles, INS (Costa Rica national insurance) coverage.
  • ICT (Tourism Board) license.
  • Bilingual drivers.
  • Flight tracking included.
  • Free child seats.

This is where I'd recommend most travelers shop. We're in this tier at $220.

The high end ($350–450)

Two kinds of operators sit here:

  1. Luxury services offering Mercedes-Benz vans, in-vehicle catering, executive amenities. Real value if you want it.
  2. High-margin operators charging premium prices for mid-tier service. Often this is concierge desks at high-end hotels marking up a third-party van by 60%.

If you're not getting noticeably better vehicles or service, mid-range is usually the smart spend.

How to spot a scam quote

Watch out for:

  • Quotes that don't include "all taxes." Costa Rica's IVA is 13%. Some operators show $190 then add $25 in tax at the checkout.
  • "Surge pricing" during holidays without clear policy on their website.
  • Vague vehicle descriptions ("comfortable van"). A legit operator names the model.
  • No license number on their website or invoice. Look for an ICT number ("ICT #XXXX-YYYY").
  • Pre-payment by Western Union, Zelle, or wire transfer. Real operators take cards.

Payment methods

Most legitimate Costa Rican operators accept:

  • Credit/debit card via Tilopay, Stripe, or a local processor (most common).
  • Cash on arrival in USD or CRC (Costa Rican colones).
  • Bank transfer (less common for tourists).

Be aware: some US banks charge foreign transaction fees of ~3% on credit card charges from Costa Rica. That's a fee from your bank, not the operator — but it explains why a $440 charge can appear as $453 on your statement. If you have a card with no foreign transaction fees (e.g. Chase Sapphire, Capital One), use that.

When you should NOT book a private shuttle

  • You're 1 person on a budget. Shared shuttles save you $100+ over the trip.
  • You're staying in one location and not moving around. Local taxis or Uber suffice.
  • You want to explore off-route — rental car gives you more flexibility (but more stress on Costa Rica's roads).

How far in advance to book

  • High season (December–April): at least 1 week ahead. Holiday weeks (Christmas, Easter) — book a month ahead.
  • Low season (May–November): 2–3 days ahead is fine.
  • Last minute: most operators (us included) take same-day bookings via WhatsApp if a vehicle is available.

What if my flight gets delayed?

This is the single biggest reason to book a real private shuttle vs a budget option: flight tracking should be included free. The driver monitors your flight in real-time and adjusts pickup. No fees, no missed connections, no panic at the airport.

If an operator charges extra for waiting time on an airport pickup, that's a red flag.

What if I need to cancel?

Standard cancellation policy at most operators:

  • More than 48 hours before pickup: full refund.
  • 24–48 hours before: 50% refund (driver already partially blocked).
  • Less than 24 hours: no refund (driver fully blocked and lost income).

Date changes are usually free anytime — just notify the operator on WhatsApp.

Recap: typical 2026 budget for private shuttles

For a classic 10-day Costa Rica trip (SJO → La Fortuna → Monteverde → Manuel Antonio → SJO) as a group of 2–4:

| Leg | Cost | |---|---| | SJO → La Fortuna | $220 | | La Fortuna → Monteverde | $255 | | Monteverde → Manuel Antonio | $310 | | Manuel Antonio → SJO | $220 | | Total | $1,005 |

That's ~$250 per person for a family of 4 — for a stress-free, door-to-door private experience across the entire trip.

For Guanacaste-only trips (flying into LIR), expect $250–500 total for shuttle expenses depending on how many beach towns you visit.
