How to Get from La Fortuna to Monteverde: All 4 Routes Explained

May 29, 2026 · Diego Salas Oviedo

Boat crossing Lake Arenal between La Fortuna and Monteverde, Costa Rica

This is one of the most popular transfers in Costa Rica — and one of the most confusing for first-time visitors. La Fortuna and Monteverde are only 40 km apart as the crow flies, but Lake Arenal sits between them. Driving around the lake takes 3 to 3.5 hours. There's also a famous taxi-boat-taxi route that crosses the lake and takes about the same time but feels shorter because you break up the drive.

Here are your four options.

1. Taxi-Boat-Taxi (~$30–35 USD per person)

The "scenic" option. A van picks you up in La Fortuna, drives 30 minutes to a dock on Lake Arenal, you cross the lake by boat (45 minutes — beautiful views of Arenal volcano if it's clear), and another van picks you up on the other side for the 1.5-hour mountain road to Monteverde.

  • Cost: $30–35 USD per person.
  • Time: ~3 hours total (30 min van + 45 min boat + 1h45min van).
  • Pros: Breaks up the drive, you get to be on the lake, photogenic, cheapest organized option.
  • Cons: Fixed schedule (usually 8 AM and 2 PM departures), shared with other travelers, you need to handle your luggage on/off the boat, the second van leg is on a bumpy unpaved road.
  • Best for: Solo or couple travelers without too much luggage, anyone who likes a bit of adventure.

2. Private shuttle around the lake (~$255 USD per vehicle)

Door-to-door from your La Fortuna hotel to your Monteverde hotel. We drive around the lake on Route 142, a paved road most of the way with a section of well-graded gravel near the end. Stops on request — many travelers ask to stop at the Tronadora viewpoint over the lake.

  • Cost: $255 USD for 1–6 passengers. Larger vehicles available for groups of 7+ — see the route page for tier pricing.
  • Time: 3h to 3h30min direct.
  • Pros: Door-to-door, no schedule, no luggage juggling, can stop wherever you want, private vehicle, child seats free.
  • Cons: Most expensive option for solo travelers.
  • Best for: Families, groups of 3+, anyone with significant luggage, travelers who want flexibility on departure time.

3. Rental car (drive yourself)

If you already have a rental, the drive is doable but requires a 4x4 or high-clearance SUV for the last 25 km into Monteverde — even though most of that road is now paved, sections deteriorate in rainy season (May–November) and Google Maps still routes you on bumpy stretches.

  • Cost: Just gas (~$20 each way) if you already have the rental.
  • Time: 3 to 3.5 hours.
  • Pros: Freedom to stop, useful if you're driving the rest of the country too.
  • Cons: Tiring after a few days of activities in La Fortuna, mountain roads are not fun for first-time drivers, fuel and parking in Monteverde is limited.
  • Best for: Confident drivers who already have a 4x4 and are continuing to drive elsewhere.

4. Public bus (cheap but slow)

It's technically possible. Bus from La Fortuna to Tilarán (around the north side of the lake), then connect to Santa Elena/Monteverde. Total cost: ~$8 USD per person. Total time: 6–8 hours, including transfer waits.

  • Pros: Cheapest option, period.
  • Cons: Half a day spent traveling, multiple transfers, no luggage handling, schedules don't always connect cleanly, no air conditioning.
  • Best for: Hardcore budget backpackers with all day to spare.

Which one do we recommend?

For most travelers (couples, families, anyone with 2+ days in Monteverde and limited time), the private shuttle is the best value. You spend 3 hours getting there, not 8, and you arrive ready to enjoy Monteverde rather than exhausted from logistics.

The taxi-boat-taxi is a fun option for adventurous solo/couple travelers. It's about the same time and adds the boat experience.

Skip the public bus unless budget is your only consideration. And only self-drive if you already have a 4x4 and feel comfortable on mountain roads.
